Hurricane Preparedness

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Hurricane Earl is roaring up the East Coast, and millions of people are wondering if it will hit their area hard. Forecasts for hurricanes are helpful, but far from guaranteed to be accurate. The next 24-36 hours should tell the story. Hopefully it will have a happy ending, if you are one of those threatened.

Emergency Supplies

Even now there may be time to make a little difference. I suggest you do what you can. In the areas most likely to be hit, stores have already been overshopped, and crowds have made getting things difficult. Hopefully there are some items left on the shelves. Question is… is it worth going to the store? If it is dangerous, no it isn’t. If you can get in and get some things and get out without a confrontation or being hijacked, sounds like it may be still worth a try. Use wisdom.

When disaster strikes, stay away from stores. You’ll only find trouble there at that point in time.

Let’s assume you can get to a store and they have some stock left. If it were me, I’d get things in this order:

Food Expiration Dates

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Food expiration dates printed on the can or package of food are not an infallible guarantee. It is a guess. It is an informed guess, and I think it is good guideline. Manufacturers generally perform due diligence and test the longevity of their packaging.

But it is still a guess. That is why many expiration dates are hedged with Best By dates. Those are the manufacturers’ best guesses as to how long the food inside will taste like it was meant to taste, with a fair degree of freshness. This is probably the most conservative guess for the longevity of the food’s wholesomeness. It is my opinion that manufacturers think that the food is probably safe to eat beyond that date, but do not want to promise that.

And here I want to stress that everything in this post is only my opinion. These are just some of my thoughts, and are not intended as any sort of guideline for anyone else.

In my opinion, Sell By dates cloud the issue of expiration. (more…)

Drumbeats of War - Osama bin Laden Found

Monday, June 7th, 2010

According to very probably Mossad sources, Osama bin Laden has been in a small town outside the capitol of Iran for the past five years.

This worldclass intelligence information was leaked to the US and others at this time for obvious reasons. Israel has become a worldclass pariah in the eyes of the world community because of their handling of the ships that tried to break the Gaza blockade. Turkey is thinking about pressing that issue to the point of making it a flashpoint for regional war.

Israel, by throwing this flash-bang onto the world stage (more…)

Do Not Become Weary With Doing Good

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

The potential for a catastrophic war is certainly present in the Middle East. But it is not certain. Everything could calm down for an extended time before things heat up to the boiling point. We might have to wait for weeks, months… years. Or it could all go south tomorrow. Or a few minutes from now.

I just want to encourage my friends… and I consider you my friend if you read this blog with a good heart… not to become weary with doing good.

If you have stored provisions against disaster, you have done a good work. (more…)

Emergency Preparedness Checklist

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

One of the primary sources for emergency food in the United States is Nitro-Pak

There are good reasons.

1. ‘Iron-Clad’ 120-day Guarantee

2. Free Shipping in the continental United States over $100, most items.

3. Over 50,000 products

5. Guaranteed lowest price. If you find a lower price on an in-stock item, they will match it.

6. In business over 25 years.

7. Most orders ship in 24 -72 hours, although the time can get much longer when there is a perceived crisis, and then they also run out of the most popular items.

They have MRE’s, Emergency Food Units, Freeze-Dried Food.
They have Earthquake Survival Kits, Camping Survival Supplies, and Survival Food.
They even have esoteric emergency supplies like Space Food, Potassium Iodide and Nite-Vision Equipment.

Is this beginning to sound like a commercial?

Yes. It is a commercial. I would like you to go there and see if you find yourself saying… oh… I do not want to wait until it’s too late. I want some things on hand NOW. And start being actually prepared.

Have I gone through this checklist and made sure I have nearly all of what they suggest?
Yes. And I have a lot more of some categories, like first aid supplies.

Humor me. Go to Nitro-Pak. and click on 72 Hr. Survival Kits. Then when the next window comes up, click on 72 Hr Survival Kits. At the top of the page that comes up, you will see **72 Hour Emergency Info & Checklist. Click on that.

You will be shown an extremely well-thought-out emergency checklist.

The first part is a list of reasons why you should actually do something to be prepared. It is interesting.
The second part is the checklist with links to many of the supplies themselves. It is vital.

You can print out this checklist.

It is free.

Please take a little time and consider the checklist. As I’ve said, and as they say… because it is so true… when an emergency strikes it will be too late.

A Little Extra Protein

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

One of the most difficult categories of food to stock as emergency supplies is protein. In the past, there was a lot of powdered egg and milk. Today there is a much wider choice of good tasting, protein-rich entries from companies that supply emergency food, most notably the top-rated maker of freeze-dried food, Mountain House.

But I’ve found something else I also like very much: Cytosport Pure Protein,Tangerine flavor (none of the other flavors even come close). Pure Protein contains 40 grams of whey protein that somehow manages to taste sort of like the old-time Orange Julius drinks they used to make fresh with orange juice. (more…)

What Your Body REALLY Needs

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Before I even start, I have to say that you must talk with your doctor and find out whether your use of any of the substances or products mentioned in this post, or indeed anywhere on this site, is appropriate for you. All statements are only personal opinion, and have not been approved by any authority or agency or anyone else whatsoever. And read our disclaimer statement.

Some people wonder why we have a source for bodybuilding products on this DisasterEmergencySupplies.com website. They cannot imagine what possible items a bodybuilding site could contribute to a store of emergency supplies

But I can.

That is where I find the highest quality Glutamine in the world, in my opinion, at the lowest price to my door. Can’t beat them for service, price and quality. They stand behind their products 100%, even after you’ve used half of it. I detected a slight off color in some vitamin C after we’d had it for some time, and I asked them if it was ok to take, which I thought it would be, but just asking. They said not to even try it. They would send 2 new containers (I get large containers) to replace the two I had ordered, and would send me a label to return the unused portion. I said again plainly that I wasn’t even sure if the C was bad, I was just wondering. They said not for me to worry about it. They would send 2 new containers. They did. I had new vitamin C in a couple of days.

But I digress.

In my opinion and that of many bodybuilding nutritional counselors, the most helpful supplement for the support of the immune system and restoring the body after stress, is the natural amino acid Glutamine… also called L-Glutamine. (more…)

Lawn or Food

Friday, February 27th, 2009

From a post on MarketWatch.com by pharmainsider1 (if you wish more credit, just let me know, p1):

Here in the most liberal city (Ann Arbor) in Michigan, the local ordinances were changed to allow live chickens on homeowners property in the city limits. They also are big on bike trails, allow people to plant “organic” gardens in their lawns, etc.

To be honest, he was not too happy about this state of affairs. But Ann Arbor has been big on community gardens for over 30 years. I think they’re brilliant. There is no better way to prepare for a sudden dislocation, economic or otherwise, than to have food growing at your house. (more…)
