Drumbeats of War - Libyan Ship to Gaza Blockade
Friday, July 9th, 2010The Amalthea is set to leave Saturday from a port just south of Athens, Greece. In Greek mythology, Amalthea was the mountain goat that nursed infant Zeus, and whose magical horns were the basis for the cornucopia, the horn of plenty. The ship Amalthea will carry 2 million pounds of food and medical supplies.
It should arrive at the Gaza blockade in a little more than three days from the time they actually leave, if they do actually leave. Thirteen volunteers from Libya, one Nigerian and one Moroccan will be on board. A crew of 12 from Syria, Cuba, Haiti and India will man the ship. For a total of 27 people, by most sources.
