Drumbeats of War - Didn’t See That One Coming

Syria is building a Great Wall in Lebanon.

No kidding.

Bet you don’t see that one in the mainstream news.

It is so big (how big is it?) that construction stores in the Syrian capitol of Damascus are pretty much out of cement, putting a halt to many construction projects in Damascus. This is not a pipe dream. It is current reality. (Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu should have thought of this to solve the East Jerusalem building crisis.)

Seriously though… this is really weird, and very ominous for Israel.

The wall is 14 miles long, and will be one of the largest military structures in the region. It is heavily fortified. It will seal off a little under a hundred square miles of critical border area, making it easy to transfer heavy munitions like long-range missiles from Syria to Lebanese Hizballah… which will be the only Lebanese military allowed in the area. It is off limits to the regular army of Lebanon. That would seem very strange, but it’s not. The army and Hizballah have that kind of relationship.

More importantly, it will create a formidable barrier against any Israeli tank movement toward Damascus. This is not just for Lebanon. This is Syrian military planning, all the way.

Anyway, this was all made possible by the guy with the name I like the best in the whole Middle East… Walid Jumblatt. He’s the Druze/Christian leader who did an about face from the US to Syria. He had been essentially the last roadblock to Syrian domination of Lebanon. Okay, don’t like what he does so much. But… really… a great name.

The wall is in Druze/Christian territory.

This entire issue is another proof that Israel has totally lost their vaunted military cred. Syria knows there will be no retaliation. Or at least think they know.

How far can Israel be pushed before they feel the noose tightening beyond the point they can bear?

That is the question IDF generals recently asked their political leash holders.

No answer as yet.
