Drumbeats of War - Deadly Attack from Gaza, Torpedo Sinks South Korean Ship
The first is confirmed. Brief heavy fighting between small units on the Israel-Gaza border, over for now, more to come as Israel decides how to retaliate.
Israeli Major Eliraz Peretz and 1st Sgt. Ilan Seviatsovsky are dead from action with Hamas. Israel says Hamas started it, as usual, Hamas says Israel started it.
The battle continued after Israeli heavy armor crossed the border, to be met by Hamas’ anti-tank and other heavy weapons. Two more Israeli soldiers were injured in that fighting. No word about Hamas casualties, but my guess there would probably have been several.
And now at about a 9.5 on my weird-stuff-o-meter…
Someone apparently torpedoed a South Korean ship, causing many casualties and perhaps several deaths. The torpedo is not confirmed. That the ship Cheonan sank, with only 58 of 100 on board rescued as of this writing, is confirmed by many sources.
British sources say the Cheonan opened fire at an unidentified ship previous to the sinking.
But the government of South Korean said that according to satellite images, North Korea was not to blame for the attack.
Right.
Some media are saying the Korean tragedy caused a severe reaction on Wall Street. The market fell about 100 points suddenly. It has recovered some since. I’m thinking maybe not only the Korean incident, but the escalation on the borders of Israel has something to do with it.
Anyway, the days ahead promise to be… interesting.
