Drumbeats of War - A Time of Desperation

Things are happening I can hardly believe. That’s why I’ve been checking sources before writing this.

The Obama administration is apparently thinking of giving Palestinians the military shield of US protection under the aegis of our CENTCOM chief, General David Petraeus.

March 16, at the Senate Armed Services Committee’s hearings on the defense budget, Petraeus said he had NOT formally asked for the Palestinian territories to be transferred to his command. HOWEVER, he did say, “In fact, staff members at various times have discussed asking for the Palestinian territories to be added to CENTCOM’s turf.”

Really. He really said that.

Ask Senator John McCain. He heard the good General say that. He was quickly aware of the direction Petraeus was going, and asked him, “Isn’t the issue not the issue of settlements as much as it is the existence of the state of Israel…? So maybe you could put it all into the larger context of what needs to be done to reduce tensions on the US’s closest ally and friend in many respects.”

Petraeus did not directly answer McCain. Instead, he simply said, “Absolutely true.”

What?

What?

The Obama administration’s fascinating theory is that Israel’s settlement policy is the root problem that is keeping peace from the Middle East.

Not only are those policies stifling peace between Israel and the Palestinians. They are also responsible for putting US troops in harms way in Iraq and Afghanistan, because the conflict between Israel and Iran has spread to “Lebanese Hizballah and Hamas,” according to Petraeus.

It is not because our troops are already in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places. Our troops are simply potential victims of Israeli’s policies.

I feel like someone put my head in a blender.

There will be much written about these things. Almost all of it will have tremendous slant and ‘hidden agendas’ that will be all too transparent. Tempers worldwide will be ignited… in fact, they are flaming already. And each editor, writer and reader will assign blame to the US, to Israel, to the Arab world, depending on their loyalties.

Supposedly, the Obama administration is deepening… tremendously, overwhelmingly, abyssally deepening… what should be a non-crisis in order to keep Israel from making a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Apparently Obama is THAT worried about the possibility of a regional war that will probably not stay regional but quickly spread to the nations of the Earth.

But, expletive deleted, this just simply cannot be the best way to keep Israel held tightly to the best interests of the United States. In my humble opinion, it is perhaps the very best way to make war happen.

I could be wrong. Perhaps the wizards that surround Obama have got it figured out right. Maybe this will secure peace for our time in the Middle East.

But I really do doubt it.
