Drumbeats of War - An Echo from Russia

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

In an eerie echo of the Israeli announcement of the continuation of settlement in Jerusalem during US VP Biden’s visit to Israel, Russian Prime Minister Putin announced that the Bushir nuclear facility in Iran would be up and running this summer, shortly after Sec. of State Hilary Clinton arrived for a two-day visit.

Later, at a press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, Clinton brought up the subject and told the Russians “In the absence of those reassurances, we think it would be premature to go forward with any project at this time, because we want to send an unequivocal message to the Iranians,” she said.

Lavrov dismissed the US position with some heat, confirming that, “The project will be completed. We are now in the final stage, and this nuclear power plant will be launched. It will be put into operation, it will be functioning, producing power.” despite any US concerns.

To date, Israel has bombed every actual or suspected nuclear facility in the Middle East before completion. That is a matter of record.

What is your conclusion?

The deputy leader of Lebanon’s Hisballah came to this conclusion. Sheikh Naim Qassem told Reuters today that, “Israel or the United States cannot just bomb Iran and (expect) things to continue normally. Any attack on Iran could ignite the whole region and the assailant will pay a heavy price whether it is Israel or the United States.” He also sent a warning across the Middle East that anyone who allows their territory to be used in strike on Iran would face “reprisals”.
