Preparing for Armageddon
“We were joking Friday about people preparing as though it were going to be Armageddon — referring to the hordes of shoppers who emptied stores of milk, bread, shovels, driveway salt and other supplies.” - Tihana Blanc , Washington D.C.
A winter storm. Sure, a severe winter storm, but something relatively normal and certainly predictable. It wasn’t even a record breaker. And people emptied the stores like they were ‘preparing for Armageddon.’
I haven’t written in a while because the mood of the country has been strangely euphoric despite the depression… I mean recession. The stock market went up, and the jobless were swept under the rug. No one - certainly not the media - paid any attention to the truly Armageddon-like buildup of new generation missiles, submarines and unmanned military drones around Israel.
But the military pacts between Iran, Syria, Hizballah and Hamas have been brought out into the open this week, with a message of destruction for Israel. You can see that for yourself if you search Google News for ‘Iranian Missile Airlift’.
The Middle East is poised to drop into war at the slightest provocation.
Why it hasn’t happened yet is kind of amazing. The only reason I can think of is that the hand of God is staying it.
Turning homeward, all has been so rosy in the stock market. Up, up, up the ziggurat. Suddenly a pause… and now what goes up must come down. Because our economy just totally sucks on the most basic level. We owe our souls to the Chinese. Our politicians (no, not going to call them Leaders) admit to the US budget being over 1/3 financed by national debt. And every call for reigning in the red ink results in a higher percentage of red ink. It is insanity.
The banks are trying to prevent people from getting any credit. Yet the Fed and every other big financial thing related to the government is drowning us in debt.
So where will the jobs come from? Digging ditches for infrastructure improvement? They tried that in the Great Depression. It did not work. It extended the depression. But frankly, it’s not a bad idea to fix the bridges that are falling down and the highways that are rotting. The only problem is that we will have to do it with Chinese money.
This is not a rant.
It’s a red flag.
I’m starting to write again because maybe people are getting ready to listen about becoming prepared for an emergency.
It doesn’t need to be Armageddon around the corner to make preparedness a good idea. There will be small disasters all over the country this year, and it is possible it will happen in the place you live. It always happens in a place someone lives.
And the economy can crash at a moment’s notice. The market just dipped below 10,000 this week again for the first time in a long time. Is another huge slide downward coming? How will that affect a tottering economy? How will that affect you?
Will you always be able to afford stocking emergency supplies?
A time came in our finances where I was very glad we had the bulk of what we needed already bought and stocked away. Now we just need to keep topping it off as expiration dates are reached.
That is the only hassle. Keeping things in date. But I smile each time I do it. Because I look at what we have and I think, the stores can run out of milk, bread, shovels, driveway salt and other supplies. I will not need to risk my life going to a store where crazies with guns are fighting each other for the last box of Captain Crunch. I smile, eat the things I’ll need to replace, go to the store and spend a few dollars, come back and stock the new items… and smile again.
I hope you have smiles when whatever is around the corner… gets here.
