A Little Extra Protein

One of the most difficult categories of food to stock as emergency supplies is protein. In the past, there was a lot of powdered egg and milk. Today there is a much wider choice of good tasting, protein-rich entries from companies that supply emergency food, most notably the top-rated maker of freeze-dried food, Mountain House.

But I’ve found something else I also like very much: Cytosport Pure Protein,Tangerine flavor (none of the other flavors even come close). Pure Protein contains 40 grams of whey protein that somehow manages to taste sort of like the old-time Orange Julius drinks they used to make fresh with orange juice. I don’t know how Cytosport got a bottled sport drink to taste like that, but this particular combination of milk proteins and flavorings is absolutely spectacular. It’s head and shoulders above any other sport drink I’ve ever had.

Sometimes I offer a drink of it to people I like. At first they usually turn up their noses, expecting just another sport drink yuck taste. But they change their minds as soon as they take the first sip. Eyebrows go up in surprise. ‘Oh… that IS good!’ usually follows. The scenario ends with them walking off with my bottle of it.

It’s worth it. I enjoy seeing people actually getting off on a good slug of protein. It’s hydrating as a liquid, too, so you can count it as an secondary source of water in your stores. That’s a great combination for emergency supplies. It doesn’t need to be mixed with water, or heated, or anything else. It has a pretty good shelf life, and the 20 oz bottles come in shrink-wrapped cases of 12.

Last but not least, the citric and phosphoric acids it contains seems to help balance the overwhelming alkalinity of whey protein, buffering it toward a more neutral pH. For my body, that’s a definite plus.
